Durban is the third largest city in South Africa, and is situated on the country’s East Coast. It is located in the Kwazulu-Natal province, and is the country’s busiest port. Durban is in relatively close proximity (in South African terms) to the Drakensberg mountains.
It is famous for its subtropical climate, meaning great weather all year round, along with great beaches and the beautifully warm waters of the Indian Ocean to swim in.
The heart of the tourist area is the “Golden Mile” which actually stretches for a number of miles along the seafront. Golden beaches along with a promenade containing amusement parks, ice cream sellers, pubs and restaurants (amongst other things) line one side of the road, whilst the other side is packed with hotels.
A major Durban attraction is uShaka Marine World, which houses the largest aquarium in the Southern Hemisphere and a dolphinarium in the “Sea World” complex. It also has a water fun park (Wet ‘n Wild).
Just to the north of Durban are the two resorts of Umhlanga Rocks and Ballito, great for a slightly different vibe to the bustling centre.
